What is Deep Tissue Massage?

Deep tissue massage uses similar techniques to that of Swedish Massage, however I will apply deeper pressure to help release chronic muscle tension. The focus is on the deepest layers of muscle tissue and I will work more on the tendons and fascia (the protective layer surrounding muscles, bones and joints). I use trigger point therapy which is applying extended deep pressure to those “knotty” areas and then myofascial release to stretch and smooth the connective tissue around the muscles.

Many people seek deep tissue massage to focus on a specific problem areas such as chronic muscle pain and/or injury rehabilitation, however deep tissue massage can also help with any of the following conditions:

  • Low back pain
  • Limited mobility
  • Recovery from injuries (e.g. whiplash, falls)
  • Repetitive strain injury
  • Postural problems
  • Muscle tension in the hamstrings, glutes, IT band, legs, quadriceps, rhomboids, upper back
  • Sciatica
  • Sports concerns (runners, athletes)
  • Piriformis syndrome
  • Tennis elbow
  • Upper back or neck pain

My experience

I have a degree in complementary therapies and 10 years’ experience as a massage therapist. I have trained in advanced massage techniques, sports massage, myofascial release and pregnancy massage. This extensive study has provided me the skills required to build a therapeutic and individualised massage treatment depending on your physical and psychological needs. If you require a massage to destress then I will use light meditative strokes to promote relaxation. If you have an injury or chronic muscle pain and/or stiffness then I can use advanced massage techniques focussing on those areas of discomfort to soothe and reduce tension in the muscles.

What to Expect

Before your first treatment, I will go through an initial consultation form with you in order to establish any contraindications and expected outcomes of treatment. Your treatments may need to be adapted depending on this information.

Your massage will last around 30 to 90 minutes depending on whether you have a back massage or full body massage. After the initial consultation I will give you time to undress privately and lie down on the massage table, where you may cover yourself with fresh towels that I provide. You will never be completely exposed at any point; I will uncover one part at a time depending on the area I am massaging. If you have any concerns then please do not hesitate to speak to me throughout the treatment.

I like to play relaxing massage therapy music during my massage treatments, as this can help you to relax and unwind. However, please let me know if you would prefer not to have this. My aim is for you to be comfortable, relaxed and content in order to get the most out of your treatment.

After your massage you should feel relaxed and may feel sleepy, so it is important to give yourself plenty of time to unwind. Make the most of having every muscle in your body gently stretched and smoothed out. If you have received a deep tissue massage then the focussed areas may feel sore however this is completely normal and should begin to ease after 24 hours. Please drink plenty of water after your massage in order to help your body eliminate any toxins released from the muscles.

If you would like further information on any of the treatments I offer or to book your appointment, please call / text Clare: 0770798439.
