Pregnancy can be a wonderful experience however carrying a baby can change your centre of gravity and put a lot of stress on your back, neck, abdominal muscles, and shoulders. Pregnancy also relaxes your ligaments, so that your pelvic joints are less stable and changes your posture, pulling your pelvis forward which often causes back pain.
What is Pregnancy Massage?
Pregnancy massage uses most of the techniques used in Swedish Massage with the goal to relax tense muscles, ease tension areas, improve circulation and mobility, improve mood and promote a sense of wellbeing.
I have completed additional training in pregnancy massage and use of bolsters/pillows to position mum to be comfortably and safely either on her side or sitting up depending on which area of the body I am massaging.
I can combine aromatherapy oils within my pregnancy massage treatment to enhance the physical and phycological benefits. This will be discussed in your initial consultation. Please read more about aromatherapy massage above.
What are the Benefits of Pregnancy Massage?
Massage encourages physical and mental relaxation and can provide tremendous relief for the following conditions relating to pregnancy:-
• Carpel Tunnel Syndrome
• Fear & Anxiety
• Pain – especially in the lower back and hips
• Morning sickness
What to Expect
Before your first treatment, I will go through an initial consultation form with you in order to establish any contraindications and expected outcomes of treatment. This should take no longer than 10 minutes and your treatment may need to be adapted depending on this information.
The safety of my clients is my number one priority and extra care is taken in pregnancy massage whereby the use of aromatherapy oil is considered carefully and pressure is always adapted to suit the individual alongside the use of pillows to promote comfort.
Your massage will last around 30 to 90 minutes depending on whether you have a back massage or full body massage. After the initial consultation I will give you time to undress privately and lie down on the massage table, where you may cover yourself with fresh towels that I provide. You will lay on your side initially to begin your massage on the back area. You will never be completely exposed at any point; I will uncover one part at a time depending on the area I am massaging. If you have any concerns then please do not hesitate to speak to me throughout the treatment.
After your massage you should feel relaxed and may feel sleepy, so it is important to give yourself plenty of time to unwind. Make the most of having every muscle in your body gently stretched and smoothed out. Please drink plenty of water after your massage in order to help your body eliminate any toxins released from the muscles.
